I seem to remember being told years ago (as when I first started learning Irish) that I should say "seinnim ar an chláirseach," not "seinnim an chláirseach." But I can't remember who told me that, and can't find any examples, and I don't want to pass it on if it's not correct. Can anyone out there confirm, deny, or clarify for me?

Have a look at FGB:

seinm cláirsí... (when seinm is a verbal noun)

seinn ar fheadóg... to play on a whistle

According to Tobar na Gaedhilge, seinn is always use with "ar" when the name of the instrument follows.
You say: seinnim ceol, seinnim port, but seinnim ar an fhidil, etc.
