As regards the question of using a dialect, how about making a forum-centric 'central dialect'?

I'm not sure what you're suggesting here. No one has suggested that people not use dialects, or that there's anything wrong with using dialects.

I have found you all really helpful so far. I think perhaps that sometimes when someone asks a translation question that it can come across a certain level of disgust that the attempted translation was so bad. I'm not saying it's intended that way but written word is often open to interpretation by people. All in all though you guys have helped me a lot.

Go raibh míle maith agut

I wonder would it be possible to add an option to like a post or give it a +1 or what ever.
Just shows people appreciate whats been put up without having to add some inane comment underneath and shows people are reading, taking part passively

I wonder? That would be nice to have. It's a feature of Facebook I really like, as I can let the poster know I saw and appreciated the post even if I don't have anything to add as a comment. Is that something that can be done with this kind of forum, Breandán?

It's not a feature of the present version of the software. I imagine they will incorporate it into future versions at some stage.

In the meantime, some of us use smilies like  :good: 8-) :GRMA: to express this kind of appreciation, especially when we have nothing more to add to the discussion or explanation.

Or if it's just a query, simply saying something like "That's a good question. I'm not confident of the answer, but someone here should be able to help you" is one way to approach it.

My Irish is terrible (but that's my fault) - well I can manage to read reasonably well now, but it's the sounds that I sometimes find bewildering. Anyway it's a great privilege to be able to have access to this forum and to ask questions to all its very talented regulars, so I'm very grateful to you. ;)

I was getting that perhaps giving neutral translations. For example, there is the full on native idiomatic way, then there is a more direct native simple way, then there might be a sort of way of 'mechano' way of doing it. I recall from when I used to teach, that cognitive verbs were very frequent, so there could be a list of them and the differences between a command and a statement form (bí/bíodh vs. tá etc) so if someone asks for "Don't worry, God loves you" a quick job might be like "Ná bíodh imní ort; tá grádh ag Dia duit".

With a big enough list, it might help more people to chip in if they are confident that the chunks they are using are right

GAMES

To keep all the games together I think it would be a good idea to have links to all of them in one locked stickied topic on the main forum. If it has it's own section off the main forum I don't think it would be accessed as much.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.
