I see what he's getting at about "user's perspective" -- typically, flag illustrations are shown with an implied flagpost at the left.

He's still wrong, though, because there's an explicit flagpole in the picture.

What he's missing is the obvious solution: put the flagpole on the left of the flag. That way, it's acceptable to those who're accustomed to poleless flag graphics, and it's correct in terms of vexilology.

If he doesn't have space to switch the pole in the owl's right hand, he can mirror the graphic and have it wave the flag with its left hand instead.
