My curious law-abiding self :aingeal: wants to know if there are any posting guidelines in place as of yet. I haven't seen any around, and I'm so lost without them. :hide:

*ahem* I mean, you might want to put something even general in place. Things like 1 thread per question, don't be a troll, etc, etc.
I'm not the only one who was thinking this, right?

There is a list of rules in the translation section.

We get a fair amount of spammers, but they rarely last long :ninja:

(to clarify in case people notice missing posts, in the case of spammers, not only do they get banned but the whole thread is deleted instead of being edited.)

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

Things are a little fluid right now, as we try to work out what works best here, with this new format. I guess you could say it's a work in progress. As Bríd mentioned, the "translation" forum currently has the most explicit guidelines.

Spammers never read the rules anyway! They do make having Admin tools fun though!

Bumping this thread again, if ye don't mind! :)

Some of ye will know that I'm working on www.foramnagaeilge.com with Taoiseach (or whatever Seán calls himself here :p ).

I reckon the two sites could be mutually beneficial, and that the communities will probably intermingle a lot anyway.

At the same time I'm wary of spamming. I do some moderation on Boards.ie as well, so I know how much of a hassle it can be to deal with constant self-promoters! Should I PM an Admin to discuss this? Or is there a general guideline you can give me here about how often would be too often to mention the other forum?

I think we can discuss it here. Redwolf, Bríd and Tim can correct me as we go along so I'll start with a summary of what I see as our position as carried over from IGTF.

The policy at ILF (pretty much carried over from IGTF):

Posts should in general be polite and friendly, though it is understood that some people may be more passionate about some topics than others.

There are no specific limits on use of adult language but excessive unnecessary use is not desirable.

Personal insults, racism, trolling, spam, etc., will not be tolerated. Offenders may be removed without warning at the discretion of the moderators.

Regarding links:

Links to non-commercial sites related to Irish language and culture are generally accceptable.

One or two links in a signature are fine as long as they relate to Irish in some relevant and positive way.

Links to sites deemed undesirable by the moderators may be removed without warning at the discretion of the moderators.

References in posts to other sites about Irish language or culture and to interesting articles related to such topics are fine as long as there are not too many links per post or too many topics (called "threads" at IGTF) with repeated or similar content.

Such links should preferably include an explanation of what the reader can expect to find at the other end so that they can make a judgment about clicking before being taken off-site. (Unlike IGTF, external links from ILF are opened in a new window so that readers no longer "lose their place" when clicking such links, so the reader is no longer really taken offsite, but including an explanation is still preferable.)

Commercial links (including those about Irish goods and services) and general links not related to Irish language or culture are a bit more controversial. We therefore request that people ask for permission from the moderators before adding links of a commercial nature and then follow the above guidelines.

If in doubt, asking first will always go smoother than trying to "sneak" something past the mods.

Though in principle we do not censor posts, the moderators reserve the right to edit or modify posts to conform with forum policy.

Specifically related to Fóram na Gaeilge:

I agree the two sites are mutually beneficial and complementary in nature.

Crosslinking by mutual reference is also one way search engines rank sites, so links from your site are beneficial to us and vice versa.

You can mention the forum with a link like the above any time inside a post (since it is pre-approved. ;) )

A link here or there in a post with a grammar or other question about something being discussed at Fóram na Gaeilge is also fine as long as it is background for the question.

Frequent or repetitive separate new topics of a "come and discuss such-and such at Fóram na Gaeilge" nature would NOT be desirable, as a separate topic for every link would flood out our content,

However, you might like to maintain a single topic either in our "Gaeilge Amháin - Irish Only" forum or in our Nascanna Úsaideacha - Useful Links with a title such as "Latest discussions at Fóram na Gaeilge" (this title in Irish if you prefer, of course) to draw attention to interesting topics at Fóram na Gaeilge. You would add new links to that single topic, which would then come to the top of the forum in question each time you posted to it.

The above regarding Fóram na Gaeilge might change if you became a full-blown commercial site. ;)

I'm not sure if that answers your questions, Insect Overlord, but feel free to ask for clarification. If in doubt, it's always best to ask first.

@Mountain King - I think your current usage is covered because your project promotes Irish language in a novel way. Your approval carries over from IGTF where you asked nicely before starting, and you yourself, I think, proposed keeping posts related to your project in a single single thread/topic, which has worked well.

@Redwolf, Bríd and Tim - please chime in if I have missed something important or you want to add to it.

I agree with you Breandán. That all sounds good to me.

It's a good idea too to have a special topic/thread for Fóram na Gaeilge for everyday updating.
Like Breandán said you can also mention your fóram in the other sections too when relevant.
I wouldn't think of that as spam.

Tá céad oifigiúil faighte anois againn le bheith ag eascainigh. :D

Go raibh míle maith agaibh. :) Labhróidh mé le Seán amárach agus seolfaidh mé PM chugaibh má tá snáithe ag teastáil uainn i "nGaeilge Amháin - Irish Only" nó i "Nascanna Úsaideacha - Useful Links".

Thanks very, very much. :) I'll talk to Seán tomorrow and I'll contact the Mods/Admins by PM if we need to start a new thread in "Irish Only" or "Useful Links".
