I am interested in getting a tattoo on my wrist. I would love for it to say "Mother of sons" in gaelic. The only translation I have seen is "Mother and son" which I have been told is Máthair agus mic. I have an open mind of any other ideas that involve mother and child or mother and son. I would prefer words over pictures. Please help. Thank you in advance.

Knew redwolf was better at translations than me

It's a common misconception that "na" means "of, because of the way the definite article works in genitive constructions in Irish. It's just plain 'ol "the"...it just comes in a different place than we'd put it in English (and sometimes is used where we might not use it in English).

I usually think if na as "of the", but I can see that you are right - the "of" should really be reasoned as coming from the genitive form of the noun (when there is one), not from the na.

I mentioned that máthair mac is grammatically correct but it seems a little literal. On consultation, it has been suggested to me that the following might be more idiomatic:

máthair clann mac "mother of sons" literally "a mother of a family of sons"

That might need another grammar check, just to be sure ...
