I'm only speaking from my own experience, living in Irish-speaking Conamara, I don't know the custom in the rest of Ireland.
Here traditionally dogs are named for their characteristics too.
Báinín/Snowy, Blackie, Lady (next door). Human names when those names aren't used locally like Molly, Max, Bruno. English names too not Irish. I couldn't name Prince "Charlie" like I wanted to as that was a cousin's name. And recently with "Áine" I was told what will your sister-in-law think of the dog have the same name (Anyhow she is "Ann" LOL).
Nowadays most people name a dog what they want to and I think human names are more popular than the older names. Check out the Madra.ie website for Conamara dogs names.
