Tá wombat díreach tar éis teacht ar ais ón Ísiltír. Bhí sí ansin ar feadh trí lá (lae?), le haighidh comhdháil acadúil. Léirigh sí páipéir á scríobh aici faoina taighde.

Just back from an academic conference in the Netherlands. Presented a paper about my research.

Go hiontach! Ar bhain tú sult as? Ní raibh mé san Ísiltír riamh.

You might like to know that in an Amsterdam accent - the d in goede is softened and the g is pronounced at the back of the throat, a bit like a gh - so is sounds more or less like - hooyer daargh - not all that dissimilar to Irish really. You didn't manage see Caffler by any chance ?

Bhí sé go híontach. Bhí an óstán go hálainn.

Níor chas mé le Caffler. I learned a few phrases before I went, like ik heet wombat, spreekst u engels. The most useful phrase was of course dank u wel, which to my ear sounds like "donkey veil". Easy to remember!

The problem with saying Dank U, is that it's very similar to póg mo thóin in French, which reportedly has been the cause of many fights breaking out between Wallons and Flemish speakers. (I prefer saying wel bedankt) Try saying 'a giggly girl' several times over- een geichelige meisje.
Tot ziens ;)
