Hi! I'm am hoping someone here can help me out and would be very grateful for any assistance at all.

Quick backstory: I'm doing some homework on starting a children's choir and have been giving some thought to a name. I would like a non-english name to ensure it is original and not already used. In doing some research of New Brunswick, Canada, which is where the choir will be located, I have found lots of Irish influence which led me here.

While the two Official Languages of the province are French and English, I would like to incorporate something unique. I was looking for a short phrase that wasn't too hard to pronounce. With the help of Google Translate I came up with this:

"middle stage youth choir" = "céim lár cór ógra"

I would like to use the "céim lár" or something similar to denote "center stage" youth choir. Like "Céim Lár children's choir".

This website http://www.abair.tcd.ie/ gives the pronunciation something like "keem lair" or "keem lar" which fits my desire for something easy to pronounce.

I don't exactly trust Google Translate on perfect translations though and same goes for the pronunciation website which has me looking for more trusted advice on both and also opinions on other name suggestions as well.

"harmony choir" = "cór chéile" is another one I'm interested in as well.

What do you mean by "stage"? - different levels,stage 1 stage 2, of a course or the stage you perform on?

Stage as in a "performance on stage" or "the choir stood on centre stage".

That type of stage is either "ardán" or "stáitse".

I suggest -
Cór Ógra an Stáitse Láir

But there are probably better ways to say it so wait for confirmation/corrections or more suggestions.

Thank you for pointing that out. Hopefully there is a shorter method of saying it. The word choir isn't needed in the term either FYI. I am hoping to keep the term short so just "center stage" or "middle stage" would suffice.

For just "center stage" as the name, you could use either Ardán Láir or Stáitse Láir.
I've enlarged the names so that you can see the accent marks.

What sound does the accent give the 'a' in those words?

I've been thinking... could that be ambiguous? It might be taken to mean there are 3 stages and they are on the centre one, rather than in the centre of the one stage. Maybe we should say - Ógra i lár an Stáitse ?




You asked about the accent..
The accent give it the A an "AW" sound, a longer sound -
"Ardán" is an exception, because the first A has the same sound there as the Á, but there is a rule in Irish that when the Á comes before RD and RN it's not accented... I have no idea why.

FGB gives several examples where láir can be used in this sort of context to mean "center/central":

áirse láir = center arch
ciorcal láir = center circle

How about Lár an Aonaigh? Literally it means “middle of the fair” but more figuratively it would mean something like “centre stage” or “main attraction.” Here's a list of different meanings from an online dictionary. http://www.potafocal.com/Search.aspx?Text=aonaigh
