We're always saying how languages need to be normalized and connected to relevant things in our lives; so in light of the Hunger Games phenomenon, I was wondering if we could translate, or come up with terms for, some of the following:

The Hunger Games
District/Districts
Capitol
Tribute
Reaping
The Girl on Fire
and...
"May the odds be ever in your favour."

Maybe a good word for reaping would be "bain + de". I've heard folks say in Donegal "Tá an féar baint agam". I've "harvested/gathered" the hay. I just saw the movie today and enjoyed it thoroughly.

I think it would be bainte agam in that case. Of course, the "e" in bainte would run into the "a" in agam in speech.

That's an in-house joke about a literal translation of an Irish blessing.


Baint is "reaping".

Bain + de is used for taking off your clothes. Bain díot do chóta agus caith fút. "Take off you coat and sit down."

I do hope Féabar doesn't get "reaping" mixed up with any similar English words (though the Hiberno-English pronunciation may sound close for both.) "The Vikings came reaping and pillaging ... "
