My father is passing away soon and I wanted to get our irish surname tattooed in remembrance. I was wondering if I could please get a translation of surname "Ó Fearghail" in ogham. Thanks!

The name means a decendant of Faircheallach.
which is a given-name and in old Irish probably means "manly". Ogham is simply an alphabet system. You can find this alphabet on-line and use it to spell the letters in the sur-name. A nice Old Irish font might be a better bet for a tatoo.

Are you sure you want ogham? It hasn't been used for Irish for thousands of years.

Ó Fearghail is usually (O')Farrell in English.

And i agree ogham is just marks, not very good for a tattoo in my opinion, the Irish font breandán posted would be much nicer. But hey, its your choice.

Irish identity has:

Farrahill - Ó Fearghail
(O) Farrell - Ó Fearail

Both were probably spelled Ó Fearghail originally, but some (O) Farrell's have been changed to Ó Fearail with the spelling reform.

Farrahill, by contrast, can't be changed that way because the gh is still pronounced (as the h in -hill).

So, if their name is Farrell they have a choice or either Ó Fearghail or Ó Fearail , but if their name is Farrahill then only Ó Fearghail makes sense (unless of course they are using their Irish name to start with in which case the anglicised version would depend on how they pronounce it themselves.)

For the sake of the op, in usage I know a few farrells and they use ó fearghail but use whatever you feel comfortable with.

Also my name is very similar and people often think my surname would be farrell in english which it isnt

Thanks for all the replies! The English spelling of our name is "Ferrell" so a different surname may be more accurate....and also I am pretty set on using the ogham translation for the tattoo. Thanks for all the help!

Again, just to reiterate, Ogham is not a language and therefore there is no translation. Any language can be alphabetically transcribed into the Ogam script providing, that is, you can match the phonetics.
