Wow! How did I not know about this font?

This is the first time I’ve ever seen a seanchló font that actually maps the poncanna to their proper Unicode glyphs, rather than just using some random ad-hoc way of displaying them!

Mar sin, nár ċóir do na poncanna a ḃeiṫ ina n-áit cheart ar ḃarr na litreaċ sa téacs seo?

(Oh … yeah, I see. The poncanna are there, but in the wrong font. )

kk, please don't be disappointed. The poncanna are there properly in the font if you install it on your computer (it's how I've always done the font examples in my posts), but unfortunately they got missed in the conversion to a web font and so won't display here just yet.

I'm working on another web font set that will have them in. Coming very soon ...

Yeah, I figured it would be something like that. Do you need to convert them to webfonts? Or do they work as-is? (As far as I can tell from the site, they’re TTF fonts, and I haven’t used any of those for web projects, only OTF …)

It would be nice to have a font like normal handwriting.
Like the cursive ones they have for English but in the Irish script.

I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

There's a program on line (http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fontface/generator) to convert them from ttf to a set including .eot, .svg, .woff, and .ttf versions, but I only did the basic conversion and it left out the higher unicode glyphs.

I just have to redo it with a few more boxes ticked this time around, but the site hung when I tried it last night.


I'm only converting fonts that already exist so that they can be used online, a Bhríd. If you do come across one, let me know and I'll try to convert it and install it on the forum.

Come to think of it, I vaguely recall doing this once upon a long time ago, though I can’t remember if I ever succeeded in doing it right. This would have been before the days of CSS3 and widespread @font-face support, though, so I think I was mucking about with sIFR and various devious ways of getting IE (probably IE6, even) to play nice, too.

If the site keeps hanging for you, I’d be happy to try from here as well (if you send me the file), to see if it works for me.

It didn’t seem to hang for me. I wasn’t sure what PostScript hinting to go with (or if you wanted any of the CSS options—I assumed you didn’t), so I just went with the default.

The .zip file output by Font Squirrel is here (link removed by moderator). Let me know if I should do it again with some different settings.
