I don't know how correct it is, but that's what's used in the Irish version of "Away in a Manger":

"Tá ciúnas mór thimpeall, tá draíocht san aer,
Tá aoibhneas is áthas ar an domhan go léir..."

I'd wait for more input on this, though, as songs aren't always the best examples of grammar and usage.

We're walking in the air - would be - táimid ag siúl san aer,and - to be on the air (broadcasting live on the radio) is - bheith ar an aer.

And if you are "outdoors", "in the open air", - that's amuigh faoin aer.

Aer can also mean "sky", so:

Tá an ghrian san aer "The sun is up"
Tá na réaltaí san aer "The stars are out."


But, yes, I think the smell would be san aer.
