As stated in the topic, I'm trying to figure out how to translate "never settle". I'd also be interested in any literature on the origins and specifics of the language, there seems to be a lot to it. Thanks everyone!

Oh, there's a lot to it, certainly! Stick around...you'll learn a ton!

As far as your quote goes, we need to get more specific. By "never settle," do you mean something like "never accept less than what you want/expect"? As in "never compromise"?

Hi, I am new here and I am looking forward to have others to learn with. As for this post, I too would like to know the Irish translation for "never settle". For me it would mean "never accept less than what you want" or even "never accept less than your dream". I could see using this as a tattoo. A good reminder for lessons learned! :D

Go raibh maith agat,

Lorie

P.S. If my screen name is wrong will someone correct le do thoil? It should be Celtic Heart. I have recently seen heart as Chroí instead of Croi, so now I am afraid I am wrong.

That should be Croí Ceilteach as adjectives come after the noun in Irish.

The easiest way would be to reregister with a different e-mail address. I can then reassign your post(s) to the new account. Scrub that, I worked out what was stopping me doing it for you.

Dia duit Breandán.

GRMA for your information. Grammar is where I am struggling most. So did I understand you that you are going to change it for me? Guess I have to change my other places I have used it, I want it to be correct. Any luck on "never settle"? Go raibh maith agat.

This is a hard one. All the words I can think of which could possibly be translated 'settle' also mean 'compromise' or 'reach an agreement' in rather a positive sense. You will probably have to reach for a metaphor here - má iarrann tú bainne ná glac leis an anglais - if you've asked for milk don't accept milk-and-water.

The one other word that's bumping around in my brain is 'tánaiste'. This means the second-in-command or designated successor to a leader - you may know it as the title of the Irish deputy prime minister. It can also be used in a metaphorical sense though. 'Ná glac le tánaiste do mhéin'? It has a very literary feel to it though and I doubt it would be readily understood by the average reader.
