Just some thoughts: ar maos / faoi dhraíocht instead of ag cur thar maoil (which I think is good as it stands).

choidhchin feiceáil / feiceáil choidhchin / choidhchin a fheiceáil ??? Just considering if Breandán's translation is correct - and it probably is.

Good points, thanks Scooby. I mulled over the later question, especially, before having to commit to one or the other, so I'd welcome other people's thoughts on it, too.

Please wait a little longer for some more input. We have a few native and near-native Connacht speakers here now who will be able either to confirm my translation or correct it - or perhaps even offer an alternative that blows us all away. (I'll try to PM some to see if they'll swing by and have a look for us.)

In any case, don't ink till we get more confirmation on any given translation. It will be worth the wait to get it done right.

Thanks soo much! I really appreciate it & everyone's help at that. I love this quote so much & can't wait to get it tattooed but your absolutely right, it'll be 10x better knowing that its says what the actual quote is lol. I also don't want my family to laugh when I send the pictures. Well keep up all the good work everyone! :) lol

Hm. I'd have the choíchin (or 'choidhchin' if you prefer the old spelling - but then I'd change the rest to match...) right at the end:
...le háilleacht nárbh fhéidir d(h)ár súile a bhrath choíchin.

(The 'h' in dár is a matter of taste. It's certainly pronounced dhár but I am not sure how many people would write it that way.)

Not disputing that people might not write dhár, but since we're talking about GC and even FGB lists dho, I'd go with it.

BTW Breandán, I've just noticed you have Bunchló Ársa as a font. Great stuff.

Okay so my cousins finally responded to my email & they gave me the translation but guess what, they're from Dunegal so they speak Ulster! ughh! lol.. The only reason why I want Connacht so bad is beacuse my grandfather grew up with that gaelic. He used to be capable of writing & speaking it but he moved from Ireland a long time ago & he hasn't used it in almost 60yrs! I'm going to post what my cousins gave me & please tell me if its similar enough or if you could possibly make it Connacht lol. Ohh & they used the word drunk but I really love the overflowing instead so if someone could fix that also it'd be wonderful! Thanks.

Cousins translation (ulster) "Tá ár gcroíthe ar meisce le h-áilleacht narbh fhéidir linn feiscint."

Please help me! lol

UPDATE: Just called my other grandfather & he said that the translation my cousins gave me is what basically all of Ireland speaks & that my cousins actually teach the language. So is this just the traditionl Irish Gaelic instead of Ulster? I'm Soo confused/lost! lol

First, to avoid confusion, I've locked your duplicate post over at IGTF. It's counterproductive to continue to post this in both forums, especially as you have extensive answers here.

Second, no...I wouldn't go with what your cousins gave you, because it's very literal, and as kokoshneta an Breandán already explained, the literal route really doesn't work here. Sounds as if our hearts are getting shit-faced! Unless they're native speakers (i.e., born and raised in the Gaeltacht with Irish as their first language, as opposed to people who learned Irish in school), I'd lean toward what Breandán has given you (unless Bríd, who IS a native speaker, wants to weigh in on this).

Finally, to a great extent, your grandfather is right, to a point. You seem to be laboring under the misapprehension that Connacht Irish and Ulster Irish are different languages. They're not. They're simply different dialects of the same language -- think New York English vs. Texas English. That said, there will sometimes be differences in idiom, spelling or pronunciation...but nothing that would make one "wrong" or incomprehensible to other Irish speakers.

Thanks so much! Like I mentioned I dont want the word "drunk" anymore. I really loved Breandáns "overflowing" idea instead. So I would also love if Bríd could help me out too sense he is a native in the language. & my cousins were born & raised there but when they come to the US they're english is very good so I'm guessing Gaelic is their second language. & I like what Breandáns translation looks like also, it's pretty lol, so if I could get some definite correct translations that would be awesome! & I'm sorry that I dont understand everybodys suggestions but thats what I have the people who do helping me! lol. I really appreciate this! :D

Tá ár gcroí ag cur thar maoil le háilleacht nach bhféadfadh ár súile choidhchin feiceáil
"Our hearts are overflowing with a beauty our eyes could never see"

I really like this by Breandán. It's pretty & I love the "overflowing" instead of "drunk" because I now agree with all of you. So if we could make this 100% accurate, it'd be absolutley amazing!

(I figured I'd bring it on page two so people wouldn't have to flip to one back to two & so on lol. Thanks sooo much everyone!)
