I'd say it goes back further than that.
Devotion to the Virgin Mary is very Roman Catholic. People pray to her for favours more than to God.

It's common to say in Hiberno English -
Oh mother of God
or
Oh Mother Mary

Even though the exact translation is "Oh, Virgin" you wouldn't say that in English.
There may be other common ways to say it in English too (?)
