Can someone explain how you play leaisteanna scáile please? I know it's called shadow tig in English, but I'm none the wiser. I see that noughts and crosses is called an madra rua agus an ghé but wouldn't that be the name of a chasing game as well? And what are the equivalents in English of Éininí Ocracha and Ná Bláthanna agus na Beacha. I've also found after searching for quite a time, that hopscotch is cleas na bacóide (though I can't find that last word in the dictionary either) - a seesaw is maide corrach, charades are cluiche tomhais focal, a slide is sleamhnán. Crying wolf is scéal chailleach an uafáis, but is there a game associated with that?

Are you sure the English isn't "shadow tag"? We used to play that when we were kids. It was similar to ordinary tag, but instead of touching the person to get him out, you had to step on his shadow.

I've just seen another word for seesaw - crandaí bogadaí

The word I know for see-saw is 'crandaí bogadaí'. A slide is 'luascán' and I think I may have heard that a rocking horse is 'capall luascáin'. I always wanted a rocking horse as a kid, but never got one......

I've never heard "tig" used for "tag"...perhaps it's just not an American thing.

Anyway, shadow tag is pretty much the same as regular tag. One person is chosen to be "it." The other people try to keep away from "it." Usually the players who are not "it" have a limited area in which they can run, agreed upon before the game begins. If "it" manages to step on someone's shadow, that person now becomes "it." Best played on a sunny day, for obvious reasons.

That's how we played it when I was growing up, anyway. They may have different rules in Ireland.

I've seen that English-speaking Irish children used to say 'tick' - though that might be in a Dublin accent (I wouldn't know, I've never set foot in the place).
