Hello~

I have had help in naming my first Devon Rex Kitten a fairy name. I found from searching dictionaries etc that the word in Gaelic for 'fairy or changeling' is Siofra. So my girl kittie who arrived in October was named Saoirse's Siofra, or Freedom's Changeling.

I now have a boy kittie, he is very handsome and looks like a cute teddy stuffed animal. I wanted to name him Seamus, which ironically I research the meaning of and find it is also a perfect fit. Seamus is a form of James, which means 'supplanter, or usurper'. Since he is here to unseat his sister from power, I thought it only fitting.

Now, here is where I need help. His breeder and first mommy has named him Renegade, for the fact that he went AWOL from the kitten box at 0238 in the AM less at less than three days old. He had since made it a common practice. His little personality was the most outgoing and people-like.

So, I need the word for Renegade or Rebel, I have seen several, I would like to know as many as you can give me...

I don't think it directly translates but perhaps Coirpeach or Meirleach which mean Outlaw

Siofra* and Seamus* are incorrect, since they are missing síntí fada (length accents). They should be Síofra and Séamas, respectively. (Enlarged so you can see the length accents.)

Also, genitives work differently in Irish from English. You can't just add an apostrophe s.

Of course, you probably wouldn't be able to register any kind of accent mark for cats or dogs in an English-speaking country.

Looking for an Irish word that means "renegade" or "rebel", I found the following that happily contains no accents:

ceannairceach "mutineer, rebel"

An older word for renegade or outlaw is Tóraí (toe-ree)(easier to remember)

It kind of depends on whether this is for a registered name or just a calling name. As Breandán said ost U.S. registries won't accept words with diacritic marks, which really limits the number of useful Irish names for registry. If it's just for a calling name, however, it's not an issue.
