Somhairle has asked people to offer suggestions to correct the grammar, etc., in his self-introduction in the Fáilte section:

I am in my third semester of Irish at the University of Montana. Thank you for letting me join.

so I am starting a new topic for that.

First up, a Shomhairle, you seem to be mixing Irish síntí fada with Scottish ones. Nowadays the Irish ones are all like acute accents ´, while the Scottish ones are all like grave accents ` (though not so long ago there was a mixture). You can use the buttons above the Reply box to get the Irish síntí fada.

The great kilt is different from the little kilt. (There's another example of my smart Alec nature.)

The accents, I simply screwed up on. I had my MS Word set up so both the apostrophe and the button to the left of the 1 key did them the right way, but it seems to have changed on it's own.

Yeah, sorry, I saw that you'd mentioned that in the other thread but didn't go back to edit my posts.

There aren't that many errors once the accents are sorted (but don't they make for a lot of red ink!

No, not "smart alec" at all. I knew "kilt" was filleadh beag but always wondered why the beag was necessary. Now I know.

filleadh beag "(little/lesser) kilt"
filleadh mór "great kilt"

Just a friendly caution that you might not want to put your exact birth date online anywhere where it might be connected with your real name, for purposes of protecting yourself from identity theft. I always use a made up date when a site requires that it be input. Also keep in mind that there are people (and bots) out there connecting bits of info about you from various places, so if you do a lot of personal posting, don't assume that a screen name always hides your identity -- someone may be able to connect the dots using other sources.
