I'm getting a tattoo on my left arm to represent the Irish side of my ancestry. I want the phrase "Be a better man than your father" included on a small part of the tattoo in Irish Gaelic. I'd be hugely grateful if someone could provide me with an accurate translation. Also, if at all possible, if you could please include the way the phrase sounds, as I'm unfamiliar with the Irish language. Many thanks!

Probably nothing, but it felt a bit literal.

Bí i d'fhear níos fearr ná d'athair would certainly have an interesting alliteration to it (in Cois Fhairrge Irish at least, due to the similarity of fhear /æ:r/ and athair /æ:r´/ in that dialect):

This phrase would never be said or used in Gaelic. If one was to say that a person should be better than their father, it would never be put in such a way. I don't know why, but one would never mention the father at all. It would be more idiomatic..

Bíodh croí níos croíula agat....or something like that....just a suggestion.
