Apparently the town the bar is in has an ordinance against flags and banners. It is not just the Irish flag that is prohibited. And this applies only to this town. It is not state-wide or a national issue. So I don't see as anti- Irish.Rest assured that there are plenty of Irish flags flying here.

Actually, I didn't mean to present it as though it is an anti-Irish issue (Rereading what I posted, I didn't do a good job there!), it is a mad rule though. Anyway, looks like they are planning to change it, but too late for this year's Paddy's Day. I'm sure they'll make up for it next year!

Unfortunately, there are lots of places in the U.S. that have passed laws that are as idiotic as that anti-flag law.

It's their bar and they should fly whatever flag they want to.

And it can be displayed inside the bar so I don't see it as somthing to make a fuss over but that's good publicity for them.

There are lots of silly "blue laws" in cities and towns across the U.S....this appears to be one of them. In most cases, they were laws that seemed to make sense to someone at the time they were passed, but have long-since ceased to have any meaning. Generally, they're not enforced (in fact, most people aren't even aware that they're there), but because they're still on the books, they CAN be enforced, if someone complains.

Given that the pub has flown the tricolor in the past without incident, my guess is that someone took exception to it, contacted the police, and insisted that they enforce this law. I'm also betting that, by this time next year, that's one blue law that will no longer be on the books.

This site showcases a lot of these laws (some of the "dumb" laws really aren't all that dumb...I agree with the plastic bag ban, for example...but some are truly weird!) Some of Florida's weirdest laws include a prohibition against sexual relations with porcupines and a prohibition against farting in public after 6 p.m.!

Another good one: Utah legally prohibits the hunting of whales (Utah is a land-locked state, so you have to wonder how that one ever came to be enough of a problem to pass a law against it!)
