A couple of different Gaelic kings were called Máel Sechnaill, meaning disciple of Sechnaill (St. Secondus). I think Máel is related to the word maol (bald), because monks shaved their heads as a mark of discipleship. Does anyone know how to pronounce this name in modern and/or medieval Irish?

The standardised modern Irish spelling would be Maol Seachnaill. How you say that is going to depend on dialect; in particular, ao represents /eː/ in Munster but /iː/ elsewhere.

A Dhomhnaillín, go raibh maith agat. I had a feeling that máel would be pronounced the same as maol, but the á was throwing me off.
