City ordinances are passed having to do with signage all over the United States. If you think about it for a minute, without restrictions,
anyone could post anything anywhere as signage. Imagine how detracting it might be to have a 100 yard high sign depicting some oddball image as you enter a city. We can all imagine what might be offensive to our own senses. This can affect a city's property values and the way others perceive the city.
Cities using many different rationale impose sign ordinances as part of their ordinances. Atlantic Beach, Florida enacted a set of ordinances and I took a minute to review them and found the one about flags. Who knows exactly why that was put it, but you can see it is one more restriction in a long litany of restrictions. See the ordinance at:
http://search.municode.com/html/10377/MCC_TOC.htmlI don't think the City Council intended to prohibit Irish flags on Irish pubs on St. Patrick's day, but this is what happens when government overreaches and makes laws which are in my opinion overly broad. Restrictions can alway be broadened but they are seldom narrowed. Some people love controlling others. They like the power of writing citations, collecting fees etc. and exerting power over their fellow citizens. That is why some of you have come to know that I am a Conservative-Libertarian or Libertarian-Republican. (at one time in this country that was called a Jeffersonian-Democrat) I believe like Thomas Jefferson that "The government that governs least governs best."
Anyway.... because I am a lawyer I decided to try to shed a little light on the subject. No doubt it is now as clear as mud.
