Taoiseach's translation has problems. For one, the word place is translated twice, firstly using ceantar (district) and then áit (place).

ag iarraidh would need to be followed by the genitive.

I'd welcome suggestions or corrections to my translation above too, Scooby, if you have time Here it is again:

Ceapaim go bhfuil ball i gcroí an duine, ball le haghaidh iontais. Codlaíonn sé istigh, ag fanacht ar lánsástacht.

I've used ball to mean "place" as in "a portion or part" (sense 6 in FGB). De Bhaldraithe also had ball lag i maide "a weak place in a beam".

I've used repetition of ball deliberately as a device, since the English has a peculiar twist of its own, but perhaps inversion would be better?

I'm not coming up with any great ideas for this and really, my translation would be rather like yours Breandán. I'm not sure about istigh on its own. I think I'd use istigh ann or lastigh. Ball is probably fine. I'd tend to use it to describe a good spot to sunbathe or whatever. I can't see much wrong with áit.
