On listening to Julie Fowlis' lovely version of this song in this thread, I noticed someone had tried to write an Irish version here.

Unfortunately it has a few errors, most notably the lack of vocative case where the singer is addressing the Blackbird (think of the song An Bonnán Buí, which starts with A Bhonnáin Bhuí, ...).

Here's another attempt at a (reasonably) singable translation:

An Lon Dubh

A Loin Dhuibh, a' canadh i marbhán na hóiche
Tóg na sciatháin bhriste seo 's foghlaim eitilt
Le do bheo
Ní raibh tú ach a' faire ar an deis seo éirí suas

A Loin Dhuibh, a' canadh i marbhán na hóiche
Tóg na súile slogtha seo 's foghlaim feiceáil
Le do bheo
Ní raibh tú ach a' faire ar an deis seo a bheith saor

A Loin Dhuibh, eitil !
A Loin Dhuibh, eitil !
Isteach i solas na hóiche duibhe dorcha

A Loin Dhuibh, eitil !
A Loin Dhuibh, eitil !
Isteach i solas na hóiche duibhe dorcha

A Loin Dhuibh, a' canadh i marbhán na hóiche
Tóg na sciatháin bhriste seo 's foghlaim eitilt
Le do bheo
Ní raibh tú ach a' faire ar an deis seo éirí suas
Ní raibh tú ach a' faire ar an deis seo éirí suas
Ní raibh tú ach a' faire ar an deis seo éirí suas

(Corrections welcome)

For reference, the original lyrics are:

Quote:
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free

Blackbird, fly
Blackbird, fly
Into the light of the dark black night

Blackbird, fly
Blackbird, fly
Into the light of the dark black night

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

Just a quick note to say that I've taken a stab at the same song in Gàidhlig in the Gàidhlig part of the forum, and there's a link there to Julie Fowlis singing it beautifully. Help in finalizing the Gàidhlig version would be much appreciated.

Yes, there is a link to that thread at the beginning of my post above. The other Irish version appears to be backtranslated from the Scottish Gaelic version.
