and keeping the theme.........I know this is an oldie, but it raised its head in our house a few weeks ago. My four year old told someone he had to make a card for some worms. This was said in English. Needless to say the person hearing this thought this was very strange. What occasion could possibly prompt this? Lá na nAithreacha! A slight case of 'lost in translation'.

I found the words online from the French version of Snow White for you, Red, but I can't figure out where the "chicken noodle soup" part was. I see possibilities for parts of it, but not the whole phrase, although the sounds of French spoken at normal speed can be hard to make out if you aren't familiar with the language.

No idea. Who knows, when you're dealing with a child listening to a completely unfamiliar language. The brain will do just about anything, sensible or not, to create order out of chaos. I can kind of see how it might have crept in from "si vous pouvez," but it's clearly not an absolute correspondence. It's probably even harder to grasp now that I actually have a sense for how French sounds...as a little one, it was just a lot of random sounds that I really didn't equate with language.

I thought the lyrics of the song "Under the Boardwalk" included the line "people walking a board". Made perfect sense to a kid who has never seen a boardwalk. What else would you do on a boardwalk but walk [on] a board? (The actual lyric is "people walking above".)
