I don't know much about the difficulties in setting up websites - indeed I don't know anything about it! But I wonder - If this site is successful, won't those who hear about it look for www.irishlearnersforum.com a website name which seems to be available?

I know even less about setting up websites but I'm sure it would be possible to nab the other name too and redirect to here or vice versa? It does make sense that people may look for a site with the words Irish Learners Forum in it. Redirecting may solve the issue without having to change the name. Just a thought from someone who hasn't really got a clue.

Má tá sibh ag iarraidh fearann .com, caithfidh sibh é a cheannaigh. Bhí sé €15 (gach bhlian) chun ár gceann a fháil.

If you want a .com domain, you'll have to pay for it. It cost us €15 (every year) to get ours.

It's a good idea, but it will be up to Breandán, who owns the site.

Sure the cost can be financed by a few pop-up ads every now and again.......

Oops, wrong site!

He'll be able to sell us on in about a month at that rate. Maybe we shouldn't unpack just yet!

If he charges us by the fada/ other grammatical error it'll cost me thousands. I'll just send the money if I know where to do it.

Thanks for the suggestion, Scooby. I have thought about it from the outset, and I may do it one day, but I have used up the limit on full domains with my provider (until now without actually making any websites).

I've set things up for http://irishlearner.awyr.com/ to redirect here and also the old YaBB URL. If I do buy a domain, it's only AU$11 per year here, I'll probably park it and redirect here from it, because physically relocating would confuse the system.

Having worked in Trademarks and other intellectual property, I am pretty sure no one can stop us using the name we have. Next time you get a scam mail from someone purporting to be your bank, etc., note how they have citi.(domain).com. We are non-commercial, not-for-profit, already established (have priority of use) and have no intent to deceive. (Technically, we should be .org, but no one does .org.)

For now, searching for "Irish Learners' Forum" brings us straight up. Other more general search terms, such as "Gaeilge" are less successful but as we grow so will our search status. (Try searching "Gaeilge Amháin" and see what comes up. ;) )

One of the best ways to increase our exposure right now would be for members of IGTF to pop a link for ILF http://irishlearner.awyr.com/ into their signature - instant viral advertising. :D We are currently drawing on Redwolf's 56600 post count from IGTF (and my meagre effort  )

Here's a full signature:

I think it would be a good idea to buy it before somebody else does.
Then we'd be in trouble.

As this forum gets bigger I imagine it will need it's own server and financing. Wouldn't it be a good idea if we had a (discrete) donate button using PayPal so that grateful users can contribute. With absolutely no pressure on people to donate ofcourse. Similar to Wikipedia.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.
