We must be due to have another thread about prepositions.

Sometimes, when people are trying to translate things literally, they can be caught out by using the wrong preposition, particularly in phrases.

You may learn, for example, that 'faoi' means under. Mar shampla: Tá mé 'faoi' bhrú = I am 'under' pressure.

Then you encounter a phrase like the one below where 'under' is not in the English equivalent, but 'faoi' is the correct option in Irish.

Ná bíodh imní ort faoi sin = Don't worry about that

Can you think of any others?

The Gramadach na Gaeilge web site goes into a lot of detail on prepositions. Here's the section covering different ways to translate the English "for" into Irish.

Nualeargais is full of great information. The most 'interesting' sentence for me in that collection is: Is fear maith é d'fhear Sasanach = He is a good man for an Englishman.
