I know there are a few professional translators on ILF, but most of our members aren't. I thought it was interesting that you sometimes have to change things to help them stay the same. As we know here, often literal translations do not work.

Good article.

One of the biggest challenges for people translating novels, I would think, is preserving the tone. You don't, for example, want to think you're reading an Irish re-imagination of, say, "The Hobbit." As much as possible, you want it to feel as if Tolkien himself just happened to write it in Irish (fat chance there, I know!), as a fluent and idiomatic Irish speaker.
