For Ireland, green should be nearest the flag-pole. Unless I'm mistaken.

Definitely, although it can be handy to have another country's flag so close. Years ago when I went to a local flag store to buy an Irish flag, they were all out of them, but they had one Ivory Coast flag left, so I just flew it backwards.

.... and he doesn't get it.

(I'm not sharing anything private here, it's on the open forum.)

Brighid:Sorry to tell you guys but that is the Ivory Coast flag. The Irish tricolour has green nearest the post.

alexinIreland:It is supposed to look like the Irish flag from the viewers perspective- more people would complain if green was nearest, as they would think it was the Ivory Coast flag in that situation

Brighid:From viewers perspective it is still the Ivory Coast flag. It is the colour that is nearest the flag-pole that counts. Not the direction the "wind" is blowing it.

alexinIreland:I meant that from the viewers' perspective, the colours go (from left to right) green, white, orange, so it looks correct.

Send the link so a few more can tell them. This guy's point is daft. The usual point I have to make with people is that it is orange and not gold so this is a new one for me!

All governments publish an official document on flag etiquette. Here is Ireland's

http://www.taoiseach.gov.ie/upload/publ ... s/1104.pdf

It states very clearly on page 7 section 1:

Quote:
The Flag should normally be displayed on a staff, the green being next to the staff, the white in the middle and the orange farthest from the staff.

It would be hard for him to argue with that as it is both clear and official.

Tut, tut! Robert, you are making the rookie mistake of applying logic to the situation! By the sound of it, he will reply with 'it will depend on what side of the building you are on!' :bash: Still, worth a try. :nail:

I am hoping that their discussion has not gone on long enough for Godwin's law to take effect.

I wouldn't worry too much about it - it's just fan art done by someone else that he used in one of his forum posts. That said, if it does end up being used in an official capacity (I'd figure Duolingo would use their in-house artists for that), user Rhynn from the Dutch course made it (she makes them for a lot of the contributor teams) - she'd be the one to mention it to. It would be an easy fix, honestly. I'm completely unskilled at digital art, but I could fix that in seconds! :P
