Dia dhaoibh,
is mise "FearMhaighEo", agus tá mé nua ar an suíomh seo. D'fhoghlaim mé Gaeilge ar scoil agus nuair a bhí mé in ollscoil agus anois tá mé ag iarraidh í a chleachtadh. Tá an-shuim agam i gcúrsaí Gaeilge agus ina stair.
Tá mé ag iarraidh fáil amach má tá caoi ann chun an "noise" atá sna taifeadtaí Doegen a bhaint amach. Is iontach an acmhainn í ach uaireanta tá sé deacair le éist leis an gcainteoir.

I was wondering if there's a way to remove the background noise from the Doegen Recordings. It can sometimes be difficult to hear clearly what exactly the speaker is saying. However I think that it's a fantastic resource to listen to lost dialects.

The easiest way is to use sound editing software. I recommend Audacity because it's a free download and comes with a noise removal filter. The filter makes things very easy because you don't have to edit out the unwanted sounds manually. There are loads of tutorials online if you can't figure out how to use the noise removal function.

The big question is why the recordings weren't cleaned up to begin with

I suppose the history of the country wasn't considered important enough to spend an extra minute or two cleaning them up. They're much easier to understand without the hiss in the background and a professional could probably make them sound like new.

The recordings are an excellent resource to hear old dialects, many of which were not impacted by English at the time the speakers were born. It's a shame that there wasn't more recorded before independence.

I'd be happy to pay that professional good money to purchase/download them :D
I doubt I'd be alone too.

Apart from the audio quality, it's a good site. The stories are transcribed so they're easy to follow if you can't quite catch what they're saying and there's a translation aswell.
I wish TG4 gave the subtitles i nGaeilge on the internet. Then it'd be a lot easier to follow what's being said if you're unfamiliar with the words or nathanna cainte.

Here's another link about the technical side of these recordings, which is quite interesting.

Go raibh míle maith agat as an nasc sin. Bhí sé an-shuimiúil.

I suppose that we're lucky to have them all on-line for free seeing as it took 20 years to develop the site. It's a shame the state didn't give proper support to their digitisation, but then again, that's no surprise.

I wonder could it be possible to make them a part of the Leaving Cert?

its easy enough to clean them up with Audacity to the point where the crackle and hiss are hardly noticeable. One or two of the recordings were still less than perfectly clear.

I wonder how clear they could be made by a professional ?

Are there other similar archives of information not easily accessible to the public ? such in various government bodies, university's, RTÉ etc.
