Hi there,

Could someone please tell me how McLoughlin is spelt in Irish. I am unmarried as I think this makes a difference.

Many thanks,

Ciara :)

For a(n unmarried) woman, MacLoughlin is Nic Lochlainn.
For a man it's Mac Lochlainn.

If a woman marries, she may choose to keep her own surname or take her husband's surname. If she takes her husband's, and his name begins with Mac, then for her the Mac is replaced by Bean Mhic ("wife of the son of"), although some people omit the Bean part. So, a woman marrying a man named Mac Lochlainn can choose between Bean Mhic Lochlainn and Mhic Lochlainn.
