HI all, I was wondering if someone could translate my school's mottos
one is: "Sub Umbra Petri" in latin or "Under the Shadow of Peter"
also:"Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" meaning "for the greater glory of God"

The expression "under the shadow of the Lord" is given in Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla (FGB) as ar scáth an Tiarna, so I'd suggest ar scáth Pheadair for "Sub Umbra Petri".

FGB gives chun glóire Dé for "for the glory of God". I'm not sure how to fit "greater" in there, though.

Perhaps:

chun glóire móire Dé (fixed as per kk's correction below)

or

chun ardghlóire Dé

But there's a mediaeval motto that was "dochum glóire Dé agus onóra na hÉireann".

So, do you think FGB's chun glóire Dé is incorrect, Lughaidh (Graiméar Gaeilge na mBráithre Críostaí has chun glóire Dé as well)? or does adding mór change the case from genitive to nominative?

I don’t like this much—glóire móire sounds a bit … twee. In Ulster particularly, where óire is pronounced as “oy-yeh”, so you get “gloy-yeh moy-yeh”.

My translations are usually GU (Ulster Irish), unless CO (Standard Orthography) is requested.

Well, it is correct but old-fashioned, because in Modern Irish, most of the time you don't put two nouns in the genitive one after another. As you say "hata fhear an phoist" and not "hata fir an phoist". Maybe chun glóire Dé is a set phrase, I don't know, anyway it does'nt follow the normal rules of the modern language.
