In answer to the first suggestion, I think that is a great idea. I'll look into doing that soon.
For the second, I think that this way people can just look in one or two forums that interest them and ignore the ones that don't.
If I want to see the whole board in one place like at IGTF, I use the "View unread posts". That brings up a list like IGTF's main page, but only showing topics with posts I haven't read.
You can also do a search for "*". That will bring up everything, read and unread.
If I've read a post earlier and want to go back and answer it, "View new posts" or "View unanswered posts" will usually find it for me.
Similarly, if I'm in a hurry, I may just look at "View your posts" to see if there were any answers to things I've posted, or "View active topics" to just read the ones everybody is really actively posting in.
It may be a little hard to work out where to place a post sometimes but if people post in the "wrong" area, the mods will move the topic where they think it will get the best attention or assistance for the subject matter.
Try those tips and see if it makes things any easier.
