Hi everyone,

While reading Gaelscéal, I come across the word "Bunmhaoiniú/Bunmhaoinithe" quite often, and all the usual sources (Ó Dónaill, http://www.focal.ie, etc.) haven't quite been able to tell me what it means.

I'm familiar with the concept of "maoiniú" (funding). I have seen also that bunmhaoiniú would mean "core funding" but I don't exactly know what that is.

Example is a headline from Gaelscéal 8 Feabhra 2012:

"B'fhéidir sé mhí d'fhanacht i ndán don 19 eagraíocht bunmhaoinithe sula bhfaighidh siad cinneadh ón Fhoras."

Straight after the headline, in the article it goes on "D'fhéadfadh an 19 eagraíocht a fhaigheann bunmhaoiniú ó Fhoras na Gaeilge a bheith ag fanacht go mí Dheireadh Fómhair nó níos déanaí le cinneadh a fháil faoin tSamhail Nua Mhaoinithe".

Is the funding core to the organisations or to Foras na Gaeilge? Is it that the get most of/their most essential funding from FnaG?

B.

"Perhaps six months of waiting in store for the 19 core-funded organizations before they get approval from the Foras."

"The 19 organizations that get basic funding from Foras na Gaeilge could be waiting until October or later to get approval under the New Funding Model."

Yes, bunmhaoiniú would be "core funding, basic funding, basic financing".

My understanding is that there are 19 organizations that get their core funding from Foras na Gaeilge. Fóras gets it's funding from the government and reallocates the funding internally for those organizations.

Since the funding for the 19 organizations is core funding, as opposed to special projects or grants, there shouldn't normally be too much delay reallocating the funds because the money gets distributed much the same way every year. However, something introduced in the New Funding Model will slow down the process by six or more months (some extra review process, perhaps?)

Maybe it's because of the influence of Údarás na Gaeltachta? :)

Thanks Breandán for your excellent response.

I realised I was in a difficult spot when I didn't even know what the English version meant :)

And well done on becoming so expert all the way from Australia!

Briain.
