Welcome, osage59. Chiff and Fipple? Like the others I had heard Redwolf mention it so I went and had a look. Just what I need - another interesting forum to eat into my work time. :panic: (I play tin whistle, flute and uilleann pipes myself.)

Hope you enjoy our forum too.

(G'day Sassy - How goes it? Any word on Tiarnan?)

Dia duit, tá mo ainm Raven. Tá mé ar glantosaitheoirí i bhfoghlaim na Gaeilge agus bhain úsáid as Google aistriú a chruthú an teachtaireacht seo ar dtús. Tá mé Cheanada de shliocht na measctha a aithint cé mé an chuid is mó go láidir leis na máthar bhunadh na hÉireann. Bhí sí ina Murphy sula raibh sí pósta. Agus bhí sí an ceann a dúirt na scéalta.

Hello, my name is Raven. I am an absolute beginner in learning the Irish and have used Google translate to create this first message. I am a Canadian of mixed descent though I identify most strongly with mother's Irish ancestry. She was a Murphy before she was married. And she was the one who told the stories.

I am a 52 year old Pagan woman, and though I have been pursuing this path for 27 years it has only been in the last 4 or so that I have decided to dedicate myself specifically to studying the ways of my Irish Celtic ancestors. And I do not believe I can do this well, without understanding the language that they thought in.

I live in Wasaga Beach, Ontario, which is a small town where, at least to date, their are no Irish classes available so I would among other things like to be directed to the best sources for learning the Irish on-line. I have already found Daltaí na Gaeilge, the abair.ie utility provided by Trinity College Dublin and the Forvo Pronounciation site.

I am retired due to health reasons and my income is very limited, so I would appreciate being directed to services that are either free or very low cost. Also any help in developing an effective learning plan would be appreciated.

I look forward to talking with the folk here. Increasingly in the Irish as I learn.

not a good idea to use Google Translate, the translation is full of mistakes and hard to understand :)
It's better to use the few Irish you know, rather than using Google Translate, which doesn't work properly :)

By the way, míle fáilte romhad anseo / a thousand welcomes to you here :)

Hi, Raven. I have been on this path (Irish) for about 27 years myself.

Hope we can help you achieve your goals.

Google Translate is known as Google "trashlate" around here.

For anyone who doesn't know me from IGTF...I'm writing a book, well, that one book is now a first in a series AND I'm working on another-anywho, that's what brought me to IGTF. Sometimes I have questions/need translations. Of course, now I ask things sometimes just because I'm intrigued. What has become of IGT is what brought me to this site. Besides, I missed the Mods ;)

Anyway-Hello all :D

Novels-Fiction the first one that brought me to the site is about vampires. The others are about shape-shifters. I have some Irish characters in both.

Thank you for the advice on Google Translate. I suspected as much, and that is one of the reasons I declared my use of it my introduction. And I will certainly refrain from it's use in the future as I want to learn to think in Irish as well as to speak and write in it. And I believe this kind of translator would hinder that process even if it was accurate. Another was to was to show that I was taking a tongue in cheek laugh at how little I really know. Though I am not quite sure it had the effect I intended.

Is míse Gearóid.
Is Éireannach mé ach táim i mo chonaí thar lear le 24 bliain anios. Níl ach Gaeilge na Scoile agamsa ach nuair a tháinig mé go dtí
Lucsamburg bhí saghas náire orm mar bíonn na daoine anseo in ann 3 nó 4 teangacha a lábhairt agus ní raibh mé líofa i mo theanga féin.
Mar sin, thósaigh mé ag foghlaim arís. Ach ní 'polyglot' é mise agus is foghlaimeoir go deo mé!

My name is Gerard.
I am Irish but am living overseas for 24 years now. I only have 'school Irish' but when I arrived here in Luxembourg I was really embarrassed to find people here speaking 3 or 4 languages and I could not speak my own native language fluently!
So I started learning it again. But, I don't learn languages easily. I will be an eternal 'Learner', when it comes to Irish.

Le gach dea-ghuí,
Gearóid
Lucsamburg
