There are two simple steps to being banned:

1. Try to uphold the integrity of the way things were by asking people not to do anything permanent without three confirmations. Given that it has become abundantly clear that three confirmations are highly unlikely over there, the only reasonable way to ensure that people did not ink themselves with less than perfect Irish, was to direct them here.

2. Tell the truth about anything that has happened over there in recent months.

However, I cannot help you with your other concerns. Another concern is that posts within threads are being deleted so it looks as if people are replying to and confirming things that they in fact haven't. That is utterly unethical and possibly illegal?

We believe this is the safest and most ethical course of action.

Posting any kind of translation there is just going to make new arrivals think they can still get a decent translation over there, which is of course impossible with the most competent translators banned. I think we as a community have always felt a responsibility to ensure translations are properly confirmed.

Posting rough translations with comments like "Wait for more" at this stage is unrealistic at best and, I would even venture, irresponsible. There simply aren't enough people left there to provide the required input to reach a safe translation.

If people who still have active accounts there would like to make a useful contribution, it would be greatly appreciated if people would simply respond to translation requests there by posting links pointing here, as Caoimhín, mhwombat, etc., did:

"Most of the competent translators have moved to Irish Learners' Forum (viewforum.php?f=28)"

This will get you banned eventually, but in the meantime it may lead a few new arrivals to the right place to get the translations they are seeking.

Other than that, the less activity that people see over there, the sooner they will realise that everyone has left.


As for having our posts removed, we are looking into the legal background to do this properly as the conditions under which the information was obtained from us, and the uses to which it is being put, have changed. We will let people know when we find out the required procedure.

My Irish is very poor but when I see an unanswered question at IGTF I've been giving it a try. I've been there for a long time but I only have a chance go on-site about once a day and then I only average 1 or 2 posts. I really enjoyed the camaraderie there and the sense of community that had developed. Here on ILF most people have very good Irish and it's rare that I come on-site to find an unanwered question. You've always been patient with me and tolerated my inadequate tries by correcting me gently. When I make my daily visit, there is rarely an unanswered post that I can take a stab at. I concur that with all the compotent translators gone posting my tenative tries, unvetted, could be viewed as irresponsible.

I understand that point and I have a suggestion. I was thinking it before anyway, but don't think I posted it so this is the perfect opportunity.

How about coming up with a joke, in a language other than Irish, and trying to translate it into Irish? That way you can be the first to make an attempt and others can chip in and 'gently' correct, if necessary. Many of us would learn from that and we'd have a bit of craic along the way. Let's face it, we can never have too much of that.

So kenailan, your task, should you choose to accept it, is to post a joke in a new thread tomorrow, with your translation. Then wait for the vultures - I mean helpful members - to work their magic.....!

If it works out, others may decide to do the same. There aren't enough jokes available in Irish on the web - God knows I've looked!

That sounds like fun, actually!

We used to do a lot of things over there just for the craic. One of the funniest I remember was translating movie titles into Irish (or into what we thought they should be in Irish). Another one we did was rename the U.S. states in Irish, either using their current nicknames (for example, California became "An Stát Órga") or something else descriptive that we figured early Irish settlers might have used. We also had a thread in which we translated the first lines of famous books.
