I could not reply to this post, but I must point out something about the sample sentence. I hope you don't mind, Wombat.

The quotation:
"Even if you don't know a word of Irish, there's a lot you can do to help your children with their Irish homework. You'll be teaching them how to teach themselves. Here's a sample question from a homework assignment that we were once asked to help with. I'll use it to illustrate my point."

The sentence:
Tabhair cuntas gairid ar a bhfuil sa dán sin faoin ábhar atá roghnaithe agat agus a gcuireann an file an abhair sin os a gcomhair.

I can't understand this sentence.

The second part makes no sense to me: "agus a gcuireann an file an abhair sin os a gcomhair."

I think it should be:
Tabhair cuntas gairid ar a bhfuil sa dán sin faoin ábhar atá roghnaithe agat agus ar an gcaoi a gcuireann an file an t-ábhar sin os ár gcomhair.
This is just a guess... God help the poor student trying to figure that homework out!!

I'm glad you pointed that out. When I wrote that post, I probably only read the sentence enough to get the meaning. I'll add a note to the post.

Maybe the author combined various 'words of the day'. He actually thought he was ordering a chicken and mushroom pizza and asking the cost of it.

I have yet to come across a teacher who would write the likes of that (although, admittedly, the standard may be in decline due to the lack of Irish teachers available). I have, however, been constantly amazed over the years at some students' inability to take stuff down from the board accurately. The correct version of this line features on the Junior Cert Paper 2.

Here's how it was in 2010:
Tabhair cuntas gairid ar a bhfuil faoin gcineál sin ábhair sa dán atá ainmnithe agat agus
ar an gcaoi a gcuireann an file an t-ábhar sin os ár gcomhair.

I'm so glad you find it useful with your students. It wasn't until I saw all of my posts together in one place that I realised just how much there was.
