Inspired by a question on another thread by GearoidOH about colours in Irish, viewtopic.php?f=28&t=995, I thought it might be interesting to see what phrases people know that include colours.

To start us off, 'dubh le daoine' means 'black with people', in other words, 'plódaithe le daoine' or packed with people.

'Níl pingin rua agam' means 'I'm broke' or 'I don't have a copper'.

(Edited as per Bríd's correction later in the discussion, after anarchy broke out about the meaning of 'rua'!)

'Táim dubh dóite' means 'I am fed up'.

I just came across this one: 'deargbhréag' means a barefaced lie or a blatant lie.

(Apparently I'm the only one who thought this might be interesting to do!)

I think it's interesting as well...it's just that the only two I know are "pingín rua" and "dubh dóite," and people alreay got those!

Help me out here. I know that 'rua' means red, but doesn't it refer to red hair, rather than the color red?

To this novice, I think of dreag as the color red and rua refers to red hair or fur.

What for others to chime in.
