There are more opportunities to speak and hear it and there are WAY more materials for learning, etc. Also, personally you could say that Gaeilge (Irish Gaelic) is the mother language of Gadhlig (Scottish Gaelic). Native speakers I know in Donegal tell me they understand Scottish Gaelic pretty well and vice-versa.
